The Pterodactyl "Lavender City"

Pterodactyl, “Lavender City.”
Robert Coon, February 22, 1968.

This poem was published in the late 1960s, shortly before the Stonewall Rebellion that prompted the Gay Liberation movement in the 1970s and onward. It makes use of potentially coded language, as Lavender has been associated with queerness for quite some time, but it grew in popularity in the 1930s and during the Lavender Scare, before being reclaimed as a symbol of empowerment in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Pterodactyl "Lavender City"

High and Mighty, “Sexual Liberation - More of the Same Thing.” Roxanne Dunbar, October 19, 1970.

The High and Mighty was the successor to the Pterodactyl as part of the underground publishing scene at Grinnell College in the 1960s and 1970s, and published a number of articles arguing for and critically analyzing feminism, sexual liberation, gay rights, and lesbian separatism from the perspective of campus radicals.

RFD Magazine Published 1974-current

RFD Magazine has been a reader-written queer journal featuring prose, poetry, and art on queerness and rural queer life since it was first published in 1974. One of the co-founders of RFD Magazine was Stewart Scofield ‘70. It was originally mailed out from Grinnell while he lived nearby at a rural gay collective, and gay students at the college helped with the manual labor of creating the first issue in the forum.

The Salad Published 2005-2006.

The Salad was published from 2005 to 2006 as “a fresh and crunchy new voice on issues of diversity and social inequality.” It struggled to receive adequate funding throughout its publication and relied heavily on donations. It covered a wide range of issues related to diversity, including a regular column entitled “The Fruitbowl” that covered LGBTQ+ issues, and it contains the earliest known mention of Trans@Grinnell being established in a 2006 issue.

GoGo Published by SPARC from 2009-2016.

GoGo was the campus arts and literary magazine covering sexuality and gender. It discusses intimate topics and features full nudity in many photos. GoGo was first published in the Fall of 2009 and ran until 2016. The magazine was dedicated to Stewart Scofield ‘70 as a founder of the RFD magazine that inspired GoGo and to the Scofield family for their longstanding support of the Stonewall Resource Center.
